History/Origin Named after Harry Murray Bathern, of Powell Creek Telegraph Station who applied for pastoral land at Beetaloo in 1895. He was known as 'Bullwaddy Bathern' or 'Bullwaddy Bates' after the hard timber growing in the area. He made Newcastle Waters his depot from Beetaloo in the droving days. He was a partner of George Bostock who was associated with Eva Downs as part of the large Powell Creek Station. Bathern had 3000 sq miles inclusive of OT Downs. He died in 1940 at the age of 96 years and left two sons Hugh and Watty Bathern to manage the Beetaloo estate.
