| History/Origin | The Esplanade has been a defining feature of Darwin since the city's earliest days. It first appeared on Surveyor-General George Goyder's 1869 plan of the original settlement, then known as Palmerston, marked along the foreshore of Darwin Harbour as the "Public Esplanade". Originally, the Esplanade extended far beyond its current limits, reaching into what is now the suburb of Larrakeyah and stretching as far as Nebraska Beach. Today, the Esplanade remains a vital green space, echoing the vision of Darwin's early town planners and offering scenic views along the harbour. |
