History/Origin Named after the Dutch vessel the Klein-Amsterdam.
The Klein-Amsterdam and the Wesel, commanded by Gerrit Thomaszoon Pool and Pieter Pieterszoon in 1636, charted the northern coast of Australia. During this voyage, the Dutch sighted the Coburg Peninsula, discovered the Dundas Strait and sailed along the northern shore of Melville Island in 1636.
