History/Origin Named after the late Dr Alex McKenzie and Mrs Jean McKenzie who established the Yarrawonga Park Zoo in 1965. Until about 1994 this area was the site of the Yarrawonga Park Zoo and it was thought appropriate to name the road after the McKenzies. Dr Alex and Jean McKenzie came to Darwin in the post-war years and settled at Pee Wee Camp at East Point, later establishing themselves on freehold land, in 1965, where they set up a Wildlife Park which they called "Yarrawonga Park". It is believed that the name came from Victoria, the Aboriginal word origin being 'the place where the wonga pigeon nested'. Alex McKenzie died in Brisbane on 15 September 1974. Jean McKenzie stayed in Darwin, even after Cyclone Tracy, to care for the orphaned animals. Later, the area was leased by the Conservation Commission for a period until the permanent Wildlife Park was established at Berry Springs.
