| History/Origin |
Named after Abel Tasman. Tasman received instructions to sail south from Mauritius until they struck the great unknown South land or at least as far as Latitude 52 deg. Sth. He sailed as far as Latitude 49 deg. Sth but was forced to turn east by bad weather. In November he sighted the West coast of Tasmania which he named Anthony van Diemen's Land after the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies. Sailing further east he discovered the west coast of New Zealand. He eventually sailed along the north coast of New Guinea and returned to Batavia in June, 1643. After Tasman's great circular voyage around the Australian Continent it was usually named Hollandia Nova. During Tasman's second expedition in 1644 he discovered the Gulf of Carpentaria. Abel Janszoon Tasman, an experienced skipper of the Dutch East India Company in 1642-43 made the first of two voyages, momentous in Australian discovery. Both occurred in Anthony Van Diemen's Governor Generalship. In a Church Register of Marriage contracts of Amsterdam, under date 27th December, 1631 Tasman was described as a seaman aged 28 of Lutjegast in Holland. Two of Tasman's ships were the 'Heemskerck' and the 'Zeehan" (used in the first expedition). |
