| History/Origin | It is unclear who named the Cadell River, a tributary of the Blyth River. Capt Francis Cadell in 1867 during his exploration along the coast of the Northern Territory explored the area between the Liverpool River and Blyth River (named by Cadell) and probably crossed what was later named the Cadell River. (See South Australian Parliamentary Paper #24 of 1868: Exploration Northern Territory by Capt F Cadell) David Lindsay in his journal (South Australian Parliamentary Paper #239 of 1884: Mr D. Lindsay's Explorations Through Arnheim's Land) on page 15 (8 October) wrote "Crossed the river Cadell...". D Lindsay makes numerous mentions in his journal of Captain Cadell and his 1860s exploration along the coast. As Lindsay uses the name Cadell River but makes no mention that he named it, it is possible the River may have been drawn on plans prior to Lindsay's expedition. |
