History/Origin | The name was first applied in the area in the 1940s to a wartime airstrip constructed on the Peninsula. The strip was named after W J H Gove, a pilot officer with the RAAF who was killed while on service near Milingimbi in 1943. The name has since been used to describe the Peninsula and western Harbour area. Gove Harbour lies within Melville Bay. Gove Harbour was formally named in September 1987. |
