History/Origin The name Kakadu is derived from the Aboriginal Tribe "Gagadju" who live in the area around the South and East Alligator Rivers. "Kakadu" was the recognised spelling used for the tribe from early 1900s until more recent times.

The Kakadu National Park was declared a World Heritage Area in 1981.
