| History/Origin | This war-time airstrip was named after John D Livingstone, Jnr, who was born in 1915 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, USA. On 4 April 1942, Lieutenant Livingstone was apparently wounded during action over Darwin, but managed to fly to the newly completed 34 Mile airstrip where he crash landed, dying in the resultant inferno. He was buried at The Gardens Cemetery the following day. The 34 Mile strip was later named Livingstone in his honour. During the World War 2 defence of Darwin, Livingston Airfield had the code name STANLEY. |
