History/Origin Palmerston a satelite town of Darwin is located some 21km east of the city.

With the need to develop additional residential land, the government acquired the area on which the current town of Palmerston is built. The Town of Palmerston was officially named in May 1981, with construction commencing in 1984.

Following the exceptional growth of the town, in early 2000 the Palmerston Town Council sought and obtained a change in the name of the municipality to "City of Palmerston" (NTG S41 of 2 August 2000).

In the 1870s, the name Palmerston was given to the early settlement at Port Darwin to honour the Prime Minister of Britian ,Lord Palmerston, Henry Temple.

Since all communications with the settlement were by sea, goods and passengers continued to be consigned to PORT DARWIN although the settlement was named Palmerston. Some forty years later, in 1911, when the Commonwealth relieved the State of South Australia of the economic burden the Territory had become, Darwin was adopted as the official name of the capital and PALMERSTON was forgotten.
