History/Origin Simpson Gap would appear to have been named at the time of the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line (1870s).

The feature appears in McMinns Diary (held by SA Archives (Diary 566)) as SIMSON GAP. McMinn being an Overseer and Surveyor for the central section of the Line. The origin of the name is unknown.

Todd subsequently used the SIMPSON version, which has been adopted for the station and National Park in subsequent years.
