History/Origin Named by John McDouall Stuart on 4 May 1861 after "Charles Sturt, Venerable father of Australian Exploration" during his fifth attempt to cross Australia from south to north.

Bessie Threadgill in "South Australian Land Exploration 1856 to 1880" on page 55 refers to this as "Plains of Sturtia"
