| History/Origin | Tyler Pass is named after the nearby Trig Station (NTS 114) - a rock and concrete cairn, which was established nearby by Surveyor Vern O'Brien in 1960 whilst carrying out a trigometrical survey of the MacDonnell Ranges. Mr O'Brien at the time named the trig station after what he thought to be an Australian Olympic Gold Medalis. The survey party listened to the Rome Olympics on a short-wave radio with poor reception. Mr O'Brien thought he heard a "Tyler" had won the 100m backstroke race for Australia, whilst in fact it was David Theile who had won the race in Olympic Record time and giving him back to back Olympic records (1956 (Melbourne) and 1960). The name had been applied for convenience and was not to be used on mapping sheets, but has appeared on the 1:250,000 mapping series from 1961 onwards. |
