| History/Origin | One of the northern suburbs east of Lee Point Road which was partly under construction when Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin in late 1974. It derives it's name from the Yanyula tribe (or Anula tribe) of Aboriginal people in the Borroloola - McArthur River - Seven Emus area on the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. When the suburb area was designed in 1966, the linguists spelling was that listed, but variant names are recorded by Tindale in 'Aboriginal Tribes of Australia' - Yanyula, Anjula, Aniula and Janjula amoung many. The main thoroughfare through the suburb - Yanyula Terrace - perpetuates one variant name for the tribe. Although the area was known as Anula since 1960, the suburb name was not gazetted until 1984. The streets in Anula are named after early Northern Territory mines and Mineral Fields. The suburb boundary as approved on 8 March 2007 is deliniated on CP 5076. |
