History/Origin East Point appears on the plan of Port Darwin prepared by Surveyor-General George Goyder in 1869. The point forms the eastern extremity of the entrance to Darwin Harbour and has been used for a variety of purposes since that time.

During the twentieth century the area was reserved for and developed as part of Darwin's coastal defence system during the Second World War (1942-1946), including gun emplacements and infrastructure associated with harbour protection. In the post-war period the land was used for recreation.

In 1964, land within the present suburb formed part of Crown Reserve No. 1135, with trustees appointed in 1965 and declared under the name East Point Reserve Trustees. Planning during the 1960s identified portions of the area for a proposed tertiary education institution; however, this development did not proceed and alternative land at Brinkin was later selected.

The suburb of East Point was gazetted on 4 April 1984 as part of a broader program to formalise suburb names and boundaries in Darwin and to name suburbs in the developing satellite city of Palmerston. Its boundaries were amended and re-gazetted on 10 January 2001.

The suburb remains largely characterised by open space and conservation areas associated with East Point Reserve.
