History/Origin The suburb of Mitchell is named after Alexander James (A.J.) Mitchell (c1846 - after 1877), a senior surveyor with Surveyor-General George Woodroffe Goyder's 1869-70 Northern Territory Survey Expedition. As leader of Party No. 1 and second-in-command, Mitchell was directly involved in surveying the land on which the township of Palmerston (now Darwin) and its surrounding hinterland were established.

Born in England and raised in South Australia, Mitchell was an experienced surveyor by the mid 1860s. Following the Northern Territory survey, he worked on the Overland Telegraph Line and later held surveying positions in South Australia and New South Wales before leaving Australia in the late 1870s.

The suburb boundary was approved on 8 March 2007 and is delineated on CP 5077.
