History/Origin The locality derives its name from the Baines River, which was named by Augustus Charles Gregory on 14 December 1855 after Thomas Baines (1820-1875), artist and storekeeper with the North Australian Exploring Expedition. Baines was an English artist, explorer and author whose paintings and journals provide an important record of nineteenth century exploration in Australia and Africa. (See Baines River.)
