| History/Origin | This locality takes its name from the historic mining town of Burrundie which was surveyed by the South Australian Government in 1884 as the second town of the Territory after Palmerston (now Darwin). The origin of the name ?Burrundie? is believed to be the Aboriginal name for the Mount Wells area. The town of Burrundie It was centred on a railway reserve on the line between Palmerston (Darwin) and Pine Creek some 12 miles to the south. The Overland Telegraph Line staff were based there, as was a police station, a circuit court and a hospital. This town survived until around 1900 when mining development waned. |
