History/Origin This locality is named after the Harts Range and a former mica mineral field. Hart Range is believed to be named by John Ross, in 1870 whilst exploring a route for the Overland Telegraph Line, after the South Australian Premier, John Hart, born in 1809. He went to sea becoming a captain in the merchant service. He established a whaling station at Encounter Bay in 1833 before Adelaide was founded in 1836. He joined the SA Legislative in 1857 for Port Adelaide and was Treasurer in the Baker Ministry (1857), Chief Secretary in the Dutton Ministry (1863) and three times Premier between 1865 and 1871. The Hon John Hart was created a CMG and died suddenly in Adelaide in 1873.
