History/Origin | The Tanami locality takes in the south west portion of the Tanami Desert and within the Alice Springs Region. Tanami originates with the Alan Davidson Exploration of Central Australia, 1889/1900. He established his Camp No 66 at a waterhole / rockhole in the hills which he called Tanami and marked on his map. Govt Geologist HYL Brown on the map accompanying his report of 1909, mentions Chanamia. Tanami is believed to be an Aboriginal word but its origins are unknown. |
