History/Origin Ampilatwatja as an administrative area is based on and takes its name from the Aboriginal community of the same name.

Prior to the 1970's, Aboriginal people in the area lived around cattle stations. In 1975 following the excision of land from Ammaroo pastoral station, Ampilatwatja was created as living area for the Alywarr people.

The community boundary, as approved on 8 March 2007, is deliniated on Compiled Plan 5106.
