History/Origin Nganmarriyanga as an administrative area is based on and takes its name from the Aboriginal community of the same name, originally established as Palumpa, an adjoining cattle station established following World War II and provided supplies to nearby communities, including Wadeye.

Nganmarriyanga is pronounced "Nan-marri-yanga" or "None-murray-yunga".
