| History/Origin |
Named after Willem Joosten van Colster who was the Commander of the yacht 'Arnhem' the discovery of Arnhem Land being accredited to this Dutch Vessell in 1623. Two Dutch vessels, the 'Pera' and the 'Arnhem' under Van Colster (or van Colsteerdt) visited Northern Australia - together they sailed wsouth along the eastern shoreline of the Carpentaria Gulf until they reached its base. The two ships then separated; van Colster, in the 'Arnhem ', sailed northwesterly until ghe reached the northeast shore of Arnhem Land and coasted along until he passed into the Arafura Sea between the mainland and the Wessel Islands. Colster discovered the northeastern extremity of Arnhem Land, the Wessel Islands and possibly Groote Eylands in April-May 1623. |
