| History/Origin | Barneson Street was named in 1965 after Captain James Barneson (1832-1911), master of the vessel Moonta, which transported Surveyor General George Goyder and his party to Port Darwin in 1869. The Moonta arrived on 5 February 1869 and remained while Goyder surveyed the Town of Palmerston (now Darwin). The road name was revoked in 2018 following construction of Garramilla Boulevard as a new entrance route to the Darwin CBD. The project provided an opportunity to recognise Larrakia heritage through the naming of a major public thoroughfare. Following consultation with Larrakia organisations and the City of Darwin, the name Garramilla Boulevard was selected. "Garramilla" is a Larrakia word referring to the white stone of the cliffs surrounding Darwin Harbour. The commemorative name Barneson was subsequently retained through the naming of Barneson Street in Durack, Palmerston, in 2024. |
