Named after Gilbert Joseph Bonson (1887-1956), and his wife Dolly (1892 - 1988) and the Bonson descendants over five generations in the Territory, many prominent in sport. Bonson came to Australia from Wales in a windjammer during the early gold rush days of New South Wales, Kalgoorlie etc. He arrived in the Territory around 1913 about which time he married Dolly. Dolly Bonson was born in Katherine (Iresdale) in May 1892. As a youngster she was cared for by Mrs Jeanie Gunn at Elsey Station when she and her husband came to the Territory in 1902 and was known as 'Bett Bett' in Jeanie Gunn's book We of the Never Never.
