History/Origin Named after the first settlers in the locality Jim and Mike Fleming who came from the Illawarra district in NSW. Jim first came to the Territory in the 1870s to work on the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. He later worked as a teamster carting goods from Burketown to Katherine over the old Gulf coast route. His brother, Mick, followed in the 1880s and took up land in the Victoria River area which he called Illawarra. They both later settled in the Douglas / Daly River area in the early 1900s, calling their property "Oolloo". Jim died in 1927 and is buried in Darwin. Mick died in 1939 and was buried on Douglas Station.

The name OOLLOO was coined by Jim and is believed to be of Malaysian origin: the Malay word "Ulu" means "back of beyond" or "head of the waters".
