The family moved to Emungalan, near Katherine where Knowles Senior worked as a teamster carting stores in the area. The family returned to Darwin in 1924. Harold later obtained work at Fort Hill on the construction of the oil tanks and in 1930 with Felix Holmes in his bakery. The family later moved to the Daly River where they farmed peanuts and shot buffalo for their hides which were sold overseas. Harold purchased Annaburroo Station and in 1948, Point Stuart Station, which was to become a base for his buffalo shooting enterprise. He also fished commercially the Shady Camp area near Point Stuart Homestead. In 1958 he bought a share in a grocery store business in Stuart Park where he and his wife lived until 1974.
