| History/Origin | Named afterCharles Edward Herbert, who moved to Palmerston to practice as a lawyer in October 1883. At that time he was only the second legal practitioner resident in the Northern Territory. He left shortly thereafter but returned to Palmerston in 1896. In 1900, he was elected as the member for the Northern Territory of the South Australian House of the Assembly. In 1905, he was appointed as Northern Territory Government Resident (the precursor to the Administrator). He left Darwin in 1910 to become a judge in Papua. He was appointed as an acting judge of the Northern Territory in 1921, and again in 1924. He returned to Darwin on a full-time basis with his family in 1926, and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace. He left Darwin in 1928 to take up an appointment as the Administrator of Norfolk Island. In recognition of Charles Lloyd Herbert, son of Charles Edward and Anna Emelia Herbert. Charles, along with one of his brothers, Oscar, was issued with the lease over Koolpinyah Station (NT) in 1907. Later, his younger brother Evan Herbert joined Oscar on the station. Charles enlisted in Adelaide on 3 April 1916 at the age of 26. He served with the 43rd Battalion, C Company Australian Imperial Force. He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A19 Africa on 9 June 1916 and disembarked at Marseilles on 20 July 1916. Lieutenant Charles Herbert was killed in action on 4 October 1917 at Zonnebeke, Belgium. His name appears on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium, and the Darwin Cenotaph. |
