| History/Origin |
Named after John McKinlay who led one of the rescue parties in search of Burke and Wills. McKinlay left Adelaide on the 14th August, 1861. A search party led by Howitt found the bodies of Burke and Wills and rescued King one of Burke and Wills party. On being informed of this McKinlay moved northward in the hopes of qualifying for the 2000 pounds reward offered to the first man to cross the continent. He reached the Gulf of Carpentaria at the mouth of Leichhardt River on the 22nd May, 1862. The South Australian Government awarded John McDouall Stuart the 2000 pounds. |
