History/Origin Named after J.J. Parer who owned a Hotel, on the corner of Mitchell and Herbert Streets. His daughter, Beryl, was the Licensee. Mr. Parer was the prime mover in a scheme to develop the riches of the Territory. On 15th. December 1921 he called a meeting at the Darwin Town Hall to discuss the advisability of sending delegates to America to place before the financiers of that Country the vast resources of the NT. A Committee of five was appointed and was known as the 'Northern Territory Progress Committee". Mr Parer had a telegram of support from Senator Newland, Federal Parliament House, Melbourne, Mr. Parer gave interviews to Southern Newspapers during a trip South. He also published a booklet 'The Northern Territory - its History and Great Possibilities' in 1922. His name appears as Concert Director and as Clarinet player on early Darwin Concert Programmes.
