History/Origin Named after Mr James Dugald Somerville served as Senior Assistant Railway Engineer at Peterborough (SA) in 1906 and transferred to Port Lincoln as resident Engineer, Eyre Peninsula Railways. He left Port Lincoln in May 1909 with his wife Edith and daughter Mabel and travelled from Sydney to Darwin on the S.S. Eastern. They arrived in Darwin in June 1909 and Mr. Somerville took charge of the (old Palmerston) Darwin to Pine Creek Railway until the Commonwealth took over and Mr. Francis was appointed. He served under Justice Herbert and Justice Mitchell and Government Residents and met and escorted Lord Kitchener during his visit to Darwin at that time.Mr Somerville returned to SA and retired from SA Railways in 1933 and died in 1960 aged 91. Perhaps he will be remembered most for his historical researches in SA his distinguished contributions to the Australian Encyclopaedia and to the Archives on SA exploration, the history of early Port Lincoln etc.
