| History/Origin |
Named as the road leads to the original Town of Virginia, surveyed in 1869 by Goyder as a town site on the banks of the Elizabeth River. The origin of the name of the Town of Virginia is obscure but is believed to be derived from Queen Elizabeth l, the "Virgin Queen of England". Cockburn in "What's in a Name - Nomenclature of South Australia" notes: Virginia (SA) was surveyed in 1858 for the proprietor, Daniel Brady, who had in mind, Virginia, in County Cavan, which was named after Elizabeth, the 'Virgin Queen of England'. |
