| History/Origin | Duncan Road (formerly Duncan Highway) joins Victoria Highway in NT approximately 20km east of the WA/NT border and extends west to Halls Creek in WA. Duncan Highway was named by Western Australia in 1961 as a tribute to the late Mr Ronald G Duncan. Mr Duncan was Regional Engineer of WA's Main Roads Department. He was chosen for commemoration for his untiring efforts in furthering the development of the north-western portion of the state. He initiated investigations and surveys of this route in 1950 and later was responsible for the design and construction of the road. His work was described as 'pioneering' by WA Premier David Brand when he announced the State Government's decision on the name. The WA Government decision was ratified by the Nomenclature Advisory Committee on 13th June 1961, approved by the Minister for Lands on 12th July 1961 and the Surveyor General on 8th December 1961. Relevant gazettals were published on 6th October 1961 and 14th June 1963 (Corr 1293/61 p2 to 24). On 30 January 1987 the Western Australian Nomenclature Advisory renamed Duncan Highway to Duncan Road. |
