History/Origin On 19 November 2001, the Hon Kon Vatskalis, Minister for lands and Planning approved, on the recommendation of the Place Names Committee, the naming of Palmerston suburbs including PINELANDS. (Gazette NTG48 of 5 December 2001)

Pinelands is so named because prior to the development of the industrial estate in 1978, the area was a pine forest. The industrial estate was marketed under the name Pinelands. The area had previously been known unofficially as 13 Mile, Berrimah or Pinelands.
